In the Age of Wizards, Time is a commodity more valuable than gold.

When Aoife (EE-fa) stumbles upon an antique trunk in the attic, it calls to her with an ancient magic. Inside she finds a stairway leading into darkness and cannot resist stepping onto that first stair. It leads her to dark truths her mother never wanted her to uncover and love so powerful she walks through time to save it.

Her magic is dormant.

When Aoife Burke rushes home after the unexpected death of her father, she discovers her mother has vanished amid inexplicable circumstances. She returns to her childhood home to search for clues of her mother's whereabouts, but another shock awaits her. Sean O'Connell, the object of her girlhood crush, has purchased the family home. She senses Sean is hiding something from her; he refuses to let her inside and does everything he can to keep her out. A determined Aoife breaks inside and stumbles upon an antique trunk in the attic. When she opens it, instead of the normal musty clothes and ancient letters, she finds a stairway leading into darkness. It calls to her, and she cannot resist stepping into the trunk and onto that first stair, which leads her to magical truths her mother never wanted her to discover.

His magic is dangerous.

Sean O'Connell has been assigned by the Inter-dimensional Portal Protection Agency to keep Aoife and her mother out of Faery. But when she breaks into the house and disappears through the portal in the trunk - like her mother - he has no choice but to follow her, even though stepping into Faery will force him to face his past. Keeping her safe and out of the hands of the Wizard King also becomes a fight to save Aoife's life from her own mother, who has discovered a time portal in Faery leading her back in time to alter her past mistakes, putting Aoife's life in peril. Sean is willing to do anything to make sure she's safe. Even if it means he has to tap in to his dangerous magic to do it.

In the Tower of the Wizard King Age of Wizards Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Michelle Miles Katherine Jane Willis Books

It's an engaging story read brilliantly by the narrator.

As for the story:
The book has a very strong and intriguing plotline as well as unforgettable characters. I liked the parallel narration of the present and the past as it made the story both more complicated and more involving; some scenes and situations, which at first could be baffling for the reader/listener got cleared up when the two timelines "met". I also liked the fact that the author doesn't flinch when it comes to describing the darker sides of a human nature - like plotting murder, being violent... The story is more realistic here than a lot of fantasy books I've read.
The characters of the Wizard King and Fiona were the ones I probably liked best, as they were quite dark, confusing most of the time and... misleading:), their motivation seemingly obvious but.... No, I'm not going to put any spoilers in here:)
I like the main character of Aoife, too - and she rang true to life, not knowing what was going on most of the time, havig to come to terms with her true heritage in a span of a moment... a difficult thing to do for anyone...

As for the interpretation:
This was my first audiobook read by Ms Willis and I loved her performance. She is great at giving the characters their own individual voices; I especially liked the "voice" of Deaglan - an elderly wizard whom I could picture perfectly from the voice he was given as someone warm, tender, and possessing the wisdom of years of studying both magic and the human nature...
Ms Willis generally acted out rather than just read the book for me - and she did it splendidly:) I'll definitely look for some other books in her interpretation.
And one more thing: it definitely was a book I would have listened to in one sitting if time allowed - I almost did:) I only stopped listening to the first part an hour before it ended because it was already 1.30 at night (I was only able to start listening to it in the evening, unfortunately), and then the next day the same thing happened with part two:) Each time you stop you just want to immediately go back to it to find out what happens next...

Well, I liked the audiobook so much that I went on Amazon and immediately bought the e-book version, too - you don't need a better recommendation than that, right? :)

In the Tower of the Wizard King Age of Wizards Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Michelle Miles Katherine Jane Willis Books Reviews

**Disclaimer I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for honest review.**

Near non-stop action from the first few pages. Even during the slower parts, I found myself on edge, just waiting for something to happen. And something happens. Often.

This is one of my favorite genre mashups. It's fantasy and romance and the same genre that I write in, as well, so it holds a special place for me. There is lots of magic and fanciful faraway lands to explore. The characters have secrets and the entire story unfolds as a bit of a murder-mystery game with overlapping events shown from different angles and points of time. I really enjoyed trying to unravel the secrets and pick up on the clues.

Aoife is a college student, living several hours from home and becoming more and more distant from her family. When she receives a startling phone call from her mother, she leaves to return, only to find her mother missing when she arrives and a 'sold' sign in the front yard of her childhood home.

More strange than missing (and possibly dead) parents? That your teenage crush, Sean, suddenly appears, claiming to be the new owner of your home and doing all that he can to keep you out of it. Can a house really be hiding such dangerous secrets?

In this case, it certainly can. But Aoife is determined to find her mother and discover what secrets everyone around her seem to be keeping. This leads her to Faery, a fantasy world where time passes differently and her entire existence hinges on a maniacal revenge scheme.

We get to see more than one budding romance in this book, as we travel back and forth between the past and present. The love scenes were written just as well as the action scenes, which is a big plus for me. I like a balance and we definitely get to see both action and romance in this book. I simply didn't want the adventure to end!

That ending, though? Whoa.

I was not expecting that. If anyone were to appear and cause trouble, I honestly would have predicted it being someone else. I am definitely looking forward to continuing this story!

In closing...
Fantastic beginning to what I predict will be a new favorite series. Wizards, time traveling, romance, potions, revenge, royalty. Everything I love to read about! Five suns!

I absolutely loved this book
Age of Wizards is an addicting book to read! It went from 0 to 60 in 1 sentence and I couldn't put the book down until I was done reading. Can't wait to read the second installment!!! Speaking of the second installment I'm going to read it now! Its so addicting!!!
Great book and I am looking forward to getting the next in the series. We need more books that are good enough to keep us turning the pages. I read at lunch and break at work and risked being late several times it was so good.
The storytelling in this book amazed me. I couldn't believe the mashup of elements-- there's time travel, fantasy, medieval, romance, suspense, mystery, and adventure. And it all worked together beautifully.
Usually I don't like duel points of view, and particularly when it involves different timelines, and so I went in skeptical. But I was amazed to find myself just as intrigued with Fiona's timeline as I was with her daughter, Aoife's. (Pronounced EE-fa. I loved that the author included s pronunciation guide in the front of the book).
The story kept me on my toes. I delighted in the unpredictable elements. Bravo Ms Miles! And I found the characters interesting, especially Niall. It's hard to tell much of the story without spoilers.
I found the magic believable and fun. I enjoyed it and it kept me reading.
